We’ve all heard songs from our youth harping on about Put Sardaran De who wear beautiful attire and drink endless glassy even if it means going hungry or selling their land. We have a false perception that these lyrics are singing our praises as sons of Sardars. In fact they are testament to what Panjab has become, the highest alcohol consuming state in India; increasing unemployment, crime and destroying the family unit. These are not Put Sardaran De, these lyrics serve only to ridicule Panjab even further.
This track is praising the genuine Sardars like Bhai Udham Singh and Bhai Bhagat Singh who have the right and the honour to be called sons of Sardars. They surrendered all the pleasures that life had to offer, to bring their lives at the altar of sacrifice for a greater good. After them, countless Sardars spilt their blood on the soil of Punjab after 1947. It is important to note here that the chorus ‘Paunde Bhangra Te Lagde Pyaare’ is not referring to the traditional Panjabi folk dance. Instead it is referring to the dance of death that so many of our Sardars performed to perfection to first free India from Imperialism, and then to liberate our beloved Panjab from the clutches of India. |
